19년의 한국어 교육, 그리고 마주한 질문
Since 2006 I taught Korean at university language schools and inside companies. All that time, I felt something was missing. Most language teaching stayed at one level: learn grammar, get information, manage daily life. Language was only a useful tool.
2006년부터 대학 어학당과 대기업 출강을 거치며 19년 동안 수많은 학생을 만났습니다. 그 긴 시간 가슴 한구석엔 늘 설명하기 어려운 답답함이 있었습니다. 언어 교육이 대개 문법을 익혀 정보를 얻고, 생활을 꾸리는 기능적 도구의 자리에만 머물러 있었기 때문입니다.
Why do we still learn another country's language ourselves?
우리는 도대체 왜, 굳이 타국의 언어를 직접 배우는 걸까요?
I believe the answer is this: we want to connect with each other, more warmly. A Korean stops to help a lost stranger; a neighbour shares food for free. We call it “ojirap” — caring maybe a little too much. Deep inside, we know that crossing the line is the very connection that keeps us alive.
저는 그 답이 '더 다정하게 연결되고 싶은 마음'이라고 믿습니다. 길 잃은 이에게 기꺼이 시간을 내고, 이웃에게 대가 없이 반찬을 건네는 그 '오지랖' — 때로 선을 넘는 듯한 그 선 넘음이, 실은 우리를 살아가게 하는 깊은 연결감임을 우리는 본능적으로 압니다.
After 19 years, I studied the inner life, counselling, and nonviolent communication to find a way to share that warmth through language. So Onda Korea does teach grammar and vocabulary. We just don't stop there.
